Immobiliser Introduction – SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

Gasoline Version

The Immobilizer System containsa device with an integrated coil, termed ‘Active Antenna’, the crypto transponder, and the engine management system (EMS).

The Active Antenna is attached at the ignition lock and performs the following tasks :

  • supplying power to the transponder
  • receiving data from the EMS and transmitting it to the transponder
  • receiving and demodulating data from the transponder, transmitting it to the EMS

All of these tasks are managed by the EMS

Diesel Version

The Immobilizer System is made up of of an electronic device with integrated coil, similarly called ‘Active Antenna’, the ignition key-integrated crypto transponder, and the Immobilizer-Control-Unit (ICU).

The Active Antenna is attached at the ignition lock and performs the following tasks:

  1. supplying power to the transponder
  2. receiving data from the ICU and transmitting it to the transponder
  • receiving and demodulating data from the transponder, transmitting it to the
  1. ICU

All of these tasks are managed by the ICU.

System Integration

One model of the immobilizer, the med 98.2, allows the engine to start once a particular authorization is given during the start-up. This immobilizer gives permission for the engine to start by driving ON an internal solenoid valve. Likewise, it prohibits start-up by keeping that valve OFF.

The med 98.2 is a solo unit assimilating a subsystem which:

  • utilizes a valve that permits (open) or blocks (closed) the fuel to flow through the engine
  • a microprocessor which controls and activates the valve during engine start-up.This allowsengine use only once a specific permission is given.

This unit is also equipped with a basic set of parts that work to reduce the system’s dependence on the microprocessor. Apart from a brief moment during start-up, this unit allows the system to open the valve, but not to close it.

Deactiviating the KL 15 is the only method to shutting off the valve.

This characteristic allows for an optimal degree of safe operation. In the even that the microprocessor fails, the unit does not cause the valve to close. The basic result of this failure is a prevention of any proceeding engine start-ups.

characteristics show that med 98.2 immobilizer can only serve as a fully functional anti-theft device when used simultaneously with a control device, such as the ICU. When entreated, the ICU sends a previously-selected coded message to the med 98.2. Based upon this message, the med 98.2 allows or disallows the engine to start.

Though primarily an immobilizer, the med 98.2 also performs several diagnostic services when additional hardware is attached. External test instruments, such as SCAN-100, can be connected to the immobilizer to help provide this service.

HYBRID SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

HYBRID ENGINE IMMOBILISER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The immobilizer system is a theft deterrent system that determines whether or not to disable starting of the hybrid control system depending on a comparison of the key’s ID code and the vehicle’s pre-registered code. The immobilizer system compares the vehicle transponder key ECU’s pre-registered ID code with the key-embedded transponder chip’s ID code. If the ID codes do not match, the immobilizer system activates and the hybrid control system cannot be started. The transponder key ECU manages communication with the hybrid vehicle control ECU and power source control ECU. When the ID codes of the transponder chip and transponder key ECU match, the transponder key ECU authorizes the starting of the hybrid control system.

 

Starting hybrid system with key inserted into the ignition:

When the ECU in a hybrid system detects that the ignition key is turned to ON, the ECU produces a faint electrical wave, providing power to the transponder key coil. Once the key receives the faint pulse, the transponder chip gives out a key identification code. The key coil reads this code and it is amplified and transmitted to the ECU. If this code matches the previously programmed code, then the ECU switches the security indicator off, allowing the power button to be pressed and subsequently authorizes power in the vehicles various relays. .

The ACC, IG1, and IG2 relays all turn on. This signal turns the power switch’s color to amber, letting the driver know that they have properly authorized the automobile to start. The power source control ECU then sends a start-up signal to the hybrid control ECU. This code is confirmed and verified. If all of this is successful, the ECU bypasses the immobilizer and the hybrid control system starts up.

Starting hybrid system without key inserted

into the ignition:

Hybrids allow for the driver to start the car without inserting a key into the ignition. A certification output of the ECU accomplishes this, requesting a signal to the room oscillator. The room oscillator emits a signal that produces an area of detection within the vehicle. The key sends its code to the ECU via a receiver in the door. This certification code is meant to match the previously agreed upon code within the ECU transponder. If it does, the ECU switches the security indicator to ON. When the driver then pushes the power button, these matching results are transmitted to the power control ECU, authorizing the transition of the power modes. The relays all switch ON and supply power to the various power modes. At this point, the system turns the power button’s light color to amber, telling the driver the authorization was successful. Then the power source ECU transmits the all-go signal to the hybrid vehicle control ECU, which confirms the code. Once all these steps have successfully been accomplished, then the immobilizer is bypassed and the hybrid control system starts up.

An immobilizer is a system in an automobile that disables the ignition unless a specific key is applied or used. It is designed to aid in preventing vehicle theft.

The immobilizer unity is made up of two parts: a key containing an encoded transponder and an engine control unit (ECU) with identical coding to the transponder.

Once a key is inserted into the ignition and turned on, the ECU receives and decodes the code and, if a perfect match, turns over the engine. If the codes do not match, then the immobilizer does what it was named to do and disables the engine by damming the fuel supply.

Cases that requires immobilizer programming

  1. Replacement ECU. In this case, replace the every transponder of the key at once. Replace ECU – every transponder of the key should be replaced at the same time
  1. Replacement of the transponder Replacing the transponder
  1. Additional key or lost some keys
  2. Delete all codes for current or former keys from ECU
  3. Using the new key, clear transponder code and reprogram
  4. Program any additional or purchased keys.

Design Objectives

The Digital Signature Transponder was designed to be compatible to existing transceiver hardware, based on existing assembly standards and circuit blocks. This also made it so that the DST did not call for a change in automated production lines. These transponders were designed to:

  • have rapid transaction times in the challenge/response process
  • provide reliability in application in regards to the highly advanced supervision circuitry
  • maintain low power consumption, even with multiple gates for encryption
  • have minimal physical wiring
  • contain the smallest chips possible
  • contain cryptographic security at its highest level
  • keep the data processingeffort for the encryption key as low as possible

 

Encryption

In a theoretical sense, any encryption key is breakable. No password or system is perfect. But a key is considered secure if it cannot be broken or guessed in a reasonable amount of time while using reasonable resources. While the word “reasonable” is subjective, it is generally assumed that:

  • The thief will not spend more than just a few minutes in the car
  • The thief is not familiar with cryptoanalytical techniques
  • The key is not available for analysis for more than ten days

Scanning is generally the most direct approach to attacking a system. If one assumes that the thief transmit a random response to any challenge or question sent by the transceiver, then the tie taken to succeed, on average, is ts .

security controller in seconds.

In this equation, if one assumes a repetition rate of 200 ms and a response length of 24 bit, then ts = 19.4 days.

Dictionary attacks can occur if the key or challenge was available to the thief for a short period of time. In these types of attacks, the thief builds a dictionary of responses or answers to the known key. While in the automobile, the thief sends his guessed responses in hopes that he hits the right one. If he does, the engine will start. However, a quick calculation shows that even if he knew the key for ten days and in that time built a dictionary at four responses per second, his calculated rate of success is still below 1%.

 

Cryptoanalysis is used by those thieves who possess knowledge of the algorithm. Using cyptoanalysis, they attempt to find the mathematical solution by discovering the encryption key once they know a limited amount of the challenge/response pairs. The primary method of combating cyrptoanalysis is DST, mentioned earlier.

 

Supervision Circuits

The DST has a number of supervision circuits installed into its system that act to protect its reliability. A transponder must pass several tests before it can perform a command. Each of these checks is vital for the locking process because if a page is accidentally locked, the transponder can be rendered useless.

Commands, addresses, and data received during the writing phase are checked by a 16-bit Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC), according to the CCITT standard. Programming voltage must be high enough for the right length of time to make sure the programming depth is reliable. It checks that there are the right number of bits, which verifies the framing. A Radio Frequency Limiter is applied to protect the internal IC circuitry against overload and as a means of Programming Supervision. When the limiter is saturated it means that enough power is available to ensure that voltage is high enough. The status of the limiter circuit is checked for about 800ms. If limitation happens during this time, then the charge pump is engaged. Subsequently, the RF Limiter is continuously checked. If the voltage drops for any external reason then the proper counter value is not reached, showing that the programming might not be perfectly reliable.

If any of the number of checks fail, then a message is sent to the reader drive to be evaluated. That message is also protected by the CRC to prevent any incorrect information from being exchanged.
